APPLICATION OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY TO SHIP ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

Abstract:
Superconducting (SC) materials may contribute to the following elements of ship electrical equipment: main SC generators and motors of the ship propulsion system; different kinds of SC storage systems, providing uninterrupted power supply of responsible elements and units; reliable protection systems, based on application of SC fault-current limiters; reactive power regulation by means of SC synchronous condensers or SMES with thyristor systems; compact transformers and connecting cables. As a result there may be achieved smaller size and weight parameters, higher efficiency and reliability, new quality effects of the new equipment. Application of high-temperature superconductors is associated with a relatively simple and reliable cooling methods, including direct cooling by liquid nitrogen or indirect cooling with application of cryocoolers.
