Contactless power supply (CPS ®) has been used since more than 30 years, but at the beginning its main field of applications were the low power devices only. This has changed after the introduction of fast-switching semiconductors (IGBT's) which can be used for inverters up to several MW. Contactless high power supply can be applied for many industrial applications such as cranes, robots and transportation systems.
The biggest problems connected with fast switching of power semiconductors are the thermal losses, so the aim of the CSP technology is the highest efficiency. The second difficulty is the electromagnetic non-compatibility caused by the fast switching of high currents. A practical solution of this problem was developed at the Institute of Electrical Machines, TU Braunschweig. It consists of a two-terminal-pair network of passive components. This paper describes the solution that minimises the power losses and improves the EMC aspects.
