CURRENT COMMUTATION PROCESS IN A ULTRA-FAST FUSE-IGBT HYBRID CIRCUIT BREAKER

Abstract:
The ultra fast, hybrid circuit breaker with a fuse confinement and solid state switch reveals extremely fast switching on a current limiting impedance to a circuit. The voltage building up at the exploding fuse confinement reaches the level of 15 - 25V within about 2 ms. The current is commuted from the fuse path to a parallel path with a semiconductor device, which is a GTO thyristor or a large-power IGTB transistor. There are discussed the course of voltage and current changes observed in the hybrid circuit breaker. The current commutation from the fuse path to the parallel semiconductor path is in about 5 .. 10 ms and the current value limiting in the next 50 ms.
