STEFAN DRZEWIECKI - A PIONEER OF AVIATION AND ELECTRIC-DRIVEN SUBMARINE VEHICLES

Abstract:
The paper presents a concise biographical information on Stefan Drzewiecki, a genius Polish inventor and scientist, who worked in Russia and France at the turn of XIXth/XXth century. The main fields of his scientific and research work were the issues related to airplane and ship propeller theory as well as construction of submarine vehicles. The paper emphasizes the great contribution of Stefan Drzewiecki's projects and constructions to the development of underwater shipping technology. The paper points out that among various propellers used, there was the one implemented in 1885 - the innovative electric motor drive supplied from storage batteries. In further parts of this paper the Authors presented the most essential scientific and construction achievements of Stefan Drzewiecki in the field of aeronautics. The paper summary includes conclusions concerning commemoration undertakings.
